Vicksburg, MS
May 18th - July 4th, 1863 was the siege of Vicksburg, MS. The capture of this Confederate stronghold led to a big advantage for the Union. Vicksburg is in the movie when John brings his sister and her baby some food.

On April 9th,1865 Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Courthouse in Virginia. This bought the end of the U.S. Civil War. In the movie it shows Lee exit the courthouse in shame.

The battle of Gettysburg was fought from July 1st to July 3rd, 1863. It was the most important battle of the Civil War. Gettysburg is in the movie multiple times. One example is when Jonas rides his horse through a field of fallen soldiers.

July 21st, 1861 the Battle of Bull Run was fought in Manassas, VA. It was the first major battle of the Civil War. This battle was in the movie.
Richmond, VA
Richmond was the capital of the confederate states. It was a center for hospitals and military prisons. Richmond is mentioned many times in the movie.
Fort Sumter
April 12, 1861, the Confederates opened fire on the Union sea fort, Fort Sumter. April 13th, 1861 the Union surrendered to the Confederates. In the movie John erases the Union flag and changes it to a white surrender flag.
Harper's Ferry
I visited Harper's Ferry, which is the sight of John Brown's infamous raid. On October 16th, 1859 John Brown and his men raided Harper's Ferry armory to steal guns to give to slaves to revolt against their owners. In the movie we witnessed John Brown's hanging.
